The low carbon footprint of cartons

Cartons are often ignored when considering the most sustainable beverage option because, unlike glass and some plastics, they can only be recycled in specific regions. Despite this, a full Life Cycle Assessment study shows that they may still be the most environmentally friendly option.

Our recent study highlights that beverage cartons have a lower carbon footprint than other packaging options when considering their full life cycle from cradle to grave. Cartons currently have lower recycling rates than other packaging types in Australia and New Zealand, however the impacts of their manufacturing and transport are lower. Cartons also perform well across other environmental indicators, making them a good option when looking to shop more sustainably.

While our findings are specific for Australia and New Zealand, they mirror those of similar studies done in Europe and North America.
